TRANSFORMATION OF CHINESE ETHNIC CULTURE IDENTITY IN INDONESIAN FILM POST-REFORMATION (NARRATIVE ANALYSIS STUDIES OF FILM NGENEST AND CEK TOKO SEBELAH BY ERNEST PRAKASA)

Abstract

Chinese ethnic is a part of the diversity of society in Indonesia. In the New Order era, they were often to experienced racist discrimination by personally or institutionally.
Nevertheless, ethnic Chinese are known as successful hardworking in the field of trade. Ngenest and Cek Toko Sebelah are two Indonesian films that hold the theme of the daily life of minority ethnic Chinese in Indonesia, post-reform. This paper has used a narrative analysis studies.
According to Tzvetan Todorov (1977), narratives are what are said, to have chronological order, motive and plot, and also causal relationships of an event. Using the narrative structures (equilibrium, disruption, and new equilibrium), this paper has been looking to explore deeply how are the cultural identity and values of ethnic Chinese families in the post-reform era, as well as how the efforts of the main characters of both films to escape from racist discrimination.
The Ngenest film has told more about the identity of Chinese ethnicity. The Cek Toko Sebelahfilm has told more about the Chinese family. The director who is also a Comedian, Ernest Prakasa has described a picture of social reality drama that is close to the problems of Indonesian society today but is packed with a smart comedy, so as to good become a media of anti bullying for minority groups in Indonesia.
